Who is expected to spend most on graduation gifts this year?

School’s out!

Wondering who is planning to give what as graduation gifts?

According to a survey from the National Retail Federation (NRF) favorite gift items and how much is spent on them varies with age and gender.

Men typically plan to spend more on gifts than women—almost $98, outdoing women by nearly $19 on average.

Young boomers (ages 45 to 54) planned to spend the most, followed by Generation X (35 to 44), older boomers (55 to 64) and seniors (65 and older).

Graduation gifts this year tend not to be overly sentimental. The most common gift will be cash. Also popular are gift cards, paper cards (presumably to hold the cash and gift cards), apparel and electronics.

When it comes to what the new graduates may spend that cash on, last year Youth Trends found that college students’ online purchases often include clothes, concert and sports tickets, travel tickets, textbooks, books, footwear and movie tickets.

Libations were curiously absent from the list.
